Was there a defining moment during your time at UConn?
During my sophomore year in college, I had the opportunity to take Professor William Bailey’s Honors organic chemistry course. I loved the material so much that I switched the type of lab work I was doing at the time to be able to incorporate organic synthesis into my research. After that year, most of my coursework and research was focused on improving my background in the field of organic chemistry. It was by far one of my favorite classes here at UConn, and it shaped the course of my studies for the remainder of my undergraduate years.
Describe someone you’ve met here who has already impacted your future.
Through the UConn Medical School Mentors program, I was able to contact various doctors for shadowing opportunities. Over the course of my shadowing, I met Dr. Peter Schulman, a non-invasive cardiologist at UConn Health. During my time in the cardiology division, he not only taught but also inspired and encouraged me toward my dream of becoming a doctor. As a close friend and mentor, he had the most influence on my future throughout my undergraduate years.
As a University Scholar, what academic project did you pursue?
My University Scholar project details the total synthesis of two DNA adducts formed by 6-nitrochrysene, a cancer-causing agent. Through a series of organic reactions, I replicated the damaged DNA structure formed in vivo when an organism is attacked by this carcinogen.
Where are you headed after graduation?
I plan to attend the UConn School of Medicine in the fall.
What will you miss most about UConn?
Of all the things at UConn, I’ll miss the amazing ice cream the most – pumpkin-flavored ice cream was always one of my greatest weaknesses!
