[Voice disorders] are extremely common, and they’re important for us to take care of because the voice is so much a part of who we are.
—Dr. Denis Lafreniere, UConn Health Voice and Speech Clinic
You don’t have to be a performing artist to be a “professional voice user.” It’s really anybody who uses his or voice to get through the day, such as a teacher, parent, or anyone who regularly communicates by speech.
UConn Health’s Voice and Speech Clinic, which opened nearly 25 years ago as the state’s first professional voice clinic, treats voice users of all levels. Two of the program’s founders, Dr. Denis Lafreniere, ear, nose and throat specialist, and Starr Cookman, a speech pathologist, discuss voice disorders and the importance of addressing them in the latest episode of the UConn Health Pulse podcast.
