When it comes to advancing neurological care, few physicians embody innovation, leadership, and service as completely as Dr. Christopher Conner, neurosurgeon, UConn Health.
In recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to patient care and his commitment to improving lives both in Connecticut and around the world, Conner has been named a 2026 Healthcare Hero by the Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA).
The annual Healthcare Heroes Award recognizes exceptional healthcare professionals whose work has made a significant impact on patients, communities, and the healthcare field. Conner was among a select group of healthcare professionals from hospitals across Connecticut honored during CHA’s Annual Meeting on June 11.
A pioneering neurosurgeon at UConn Health, Conner is transforming the treatment landscape for patients with complex neurological conditions. He became the first physician in Connecticut to perform vagus nerve stimulation therapy for stroke recovery, a groundbreaking treatment that helps stroke survivors regain function and independence through advanced neuromodulation techniques.
His innovative work has given new hope to patients who previously had limited options for recovery.
Conner also became the first physician in the state to utilize a vagal nerve stimulation approach for pediatric epilepsy in partnership with Connecticut Children’s, bringing advanced, life-changing care to some of Connecticut’s youngest and most vulnerable patients.
“Dr. Conner exemplifies the very definition of a healthcare hero through his innovation, leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing patient care,” said Dr. Andy Agwunobi, CEO UConn Health. “His work is transforming lives and expanding access to treatments that were previously unavailable in Connecticut.”
Beyond his clinical achievements, Conner has helped shape the future of neuroscience care across the state. He played a key role in advancing legislation to establish the UConn Health Center for Neuromodulation, an initiative focused on expanding access to innovative treatments for veterans, first responders, and other patients who may benefit from emerging neuromodulation therapies.
The center’s mission positions Connecticut as a leader in a rapidly evolving field while ensuring patients can access cutting-edge care close to home.
Conner’s dedication to service extends far beyond Connecticut. Through international medical mission trips, he has provided critical neurosurgical care to underserved populations around the world. Most recently, he traveled to Peru, where he not only cared for patients but also mentored the next generation of physicians by bringing a neurosurgery resident along on the mission.
Colleagues say his commitment to education, collaboration, and compassionate care is evident in every aspect of his work. Patients and families consistently describe him as deeply invested in their outcomes and committed to helping them achieve the best possible quality of life.
“I am so proud of Dr. Conner for receiving this well-deserved award. I am also grateful to UConn Health for selecting him as our institution’s nominee and our administrative leadership for creating an environment that nurtures and exemplifies excellence. Dr. Conner has made great contributions in many arenas. He represents the many stellar faculty in our new Department of Neurosurgery who made it a destination center for brain and spine pathologies, and have committed themselves to providing care second to none today and shaping the future of healthcare.” Dr. Ketan Bulsara, chair Department of Neurosurgery and director Neurosurgery UConn Health Community Network.
Since 2002, CHA has recognized Healthcare Heroes who represent the very best of healthcare across Connecticut. Honorees receive a certificate from CHA and a proclamation from the Office of Governor Ned Lamont recognizing their outstanding leadership and service.
For Conner, the award reflects a career dedicated to pushing the boundaries of medicine while never losing sight of the people at the center of every innovation.
Through his work as a surgeon, advocate, educator, and humanitarian, Conner continues to redefine what is possible in neurological care and what it means to be a healthcare hero.
