Welcome to the inaugural edition of a new emagination column, The Pocket Protector. Named for the formerly ubiquitous plastic sleeves designed to spare pocket shirts the ruin of runny pens and smudgy mechanical pencils, pocket protectors enjoyed their heyday in the 50s and 60s.

UConn Team to Study Digestive Community in Termites
The bane of many a homeowner, the dreaded termites, may gain new respect as a source of clean energy. An interdisciplinary team of researchers at UConn and CalTech has won a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to explore how communities of microbes found in the guts of termites interact to efficiently metabolize wood cellulose.

Dean Choi appointed to CEFIA
Gov. Dannel Malloy appointed Engineering Dean Mun Choi to the Board of Directors of the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA). The first full-scale clean energy finance authority, CEFIA will drive innovation and boost the use of environmentally sustainable energy in Connecticut.

Touring the Naval Underwater Systems Ctr. as a senior, Jessie Modzelewski (CE ’79) was fascinated by a shock testing demonstration of a submarine component. Later, the graceful hull design and mission of Electric Boat’s Ohio class subs convinced him to join EB, where he specializes in stress analysis.

UTC Power Fuel Cell to Serve Depot Campus
In partnership with UTC Power, UConn will begin using a 400 kW fuel cell power plant to supply energy, heat, and cooling to buildings at the Depot campus in spring 2012. Innovative Bridge Design
As a senior, Kim Danziger (CE ’75) designed a bridge based on an orthotropic deck design with trapezoidal ribs that originated in post-World War II Europe. Later, he applied the design when helping to expand and renovate the famed Golden Gate Bridge. Today, he builds green residential developments in Newtown.
