First-Generation College Grad and First-Year Teacher Comes Full Circle
When recent Neag School graduate Sarah Hodge ’15 (ED), ’16 MA was still a high schooler, she enrolled as one of the first students in the Teacher Preparatory Studies Program at Bulkeley High School, an initiative funded by Bank of America and designed to prepare and encourage talented students, particularly from minority groups, to become teachers. Although she found that she liked working with students, a teaching career was not necessarily what she thought she wanted to pursue at the time.
Barnes Foundation Creates Opportunities for Connecticut Teachers to Participate in Summer Enrichment Program
Over nearly four decades, a total of more than 26,000 educators have convened on the UConn Storrs campus for Confratute, a weeklong summer institute that provides educators with practical strategies for engagement and enrichment learning for all students. Thanks to support from one philanthropic family institution known as the Barnes Foundation, close to 100 attendees have been able to attend Confratute over the past three years — including this summer’s program, which marks Confratute’s 39th year.

Connecticut Student Wins Library of Congress’ National “Letters About Literature” Contest
The Neag School of Education is proud to announce that a Connecticut student, Aleema Kelly from CREC Montessori Magnet School in Hartford, Conn., is the national winner of the Library of Congress’ “Letters About Literature” contest for Level I, grades 4-6. The Neag School was the 2016 Connecticut sponsor for the Letters About Literature (LAL) writing contest for students in grades 4-12.
Robert H. Hart Fellowship: Notable Educator’s Legacy to Impact Aspiring Teachers
UConn alum Robert H. Hart ’40 (CLAS) lived a life dedicated to his hometown of Meriden, Conn., including a 30-year career spent there as an educator. Hart, who passed away in April 2015 at the age of 96, will now be remembered at the Neag School through a student scholarship newly established in his name.
Neag School Celebrates 2016 Alumni Awardees
Members of the Neag School of Education Alumni Society, as well as faculty, staff, and administrators of the Neag School of Education gathered this past Saturday on the UConn Storrs campus with the 2016 Alumni Awards honorees and their guests for the 18th Annual Alumni Awards Celebration. Seven outstanding Neag School graduates were recognized at the event.
